Man Has Opinion, Enrages Internet Entities

Ξ September 18th, 2008 | → | ∇ People are Stupid, games |

The man: Ben Judd. Some producer at Capcom.

From an interview with videogamer.com posted on Kotaku.

“I liked Metal Gear Solid 4, with the exception of the story. I like Kojima’s stories, but they keep getting longer and longer. He needs to put the clamps on himself and only give himself 30 minutes. If he did that I’m sure they’d be fantastic.”

BioShock was easy as Hell, I don’t care what anybody says. That’s what people want. They want to play through it. They want to die once or twice. It’s like an interactive movie, sort of. Gamers have lost their will to continually drill down on something. It’s also the fault of the developers. If you make enough restart points; if you make it so that if you die you can restart and retry without having to go back for an hour, which is not the right way to do it, I think people will keep trying something.”

Are you outraged?! The nerve of that man! He’s all, “Hey, I think Metal Gear Solid 4 had too much exposition. Also, Bioshock was way easy.” And then he has the nerve to further explain his opinion with a few more sentences!

HOW DARE YOU, MR. JUDD. You can’t just say things like that! You work in the video game industry! Dontcha know that means you are supposed to be a mindless monkey-drone that just dances, wears funny hats, and makes everyone happy? You no longer have the priviliges the rest of us have. Surely we can no longer support you and your work from here on out. We hope your family starves.

And now the opinions of some Kotaku commenters (a community of people who come together, criticize, and complain about the video game industry) condemning the man for speaking his mind.

“Speaks the truth? He’s just spouting his opinion in a negative and unconstructive way.

What is with developers, directors, producers, and PR representatives of games and game studios getting into this trend of trash talking one another? And was is with gamers nowadays encouraging this behavior?

It seems so petty and, well, childishly bureaucratic.”

“So Mr. Judd is basically saying that Bionic Commando won’t have a story. Well, that’s another one off the list.”

“Let’s see Bionic Commando, Bioshock, or Metal Gear 4!?!! Which one do I think is a mindless piece of arcade crap and the other two rich narratives with substance and story?

Hmmmm, such a hard question”

Yeah, you get ‘em! Everyone knows games are absolutely worthless without a good story! Like Mario Bros., sports games, Tetris, Lumines, racing games, Doom, Team Fortress, any online Deathmatch … wait.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see somebody try and make a rich, complex, substantial story and find some way to intuitively weave it into a Tetris game, but come on! Calm down.

And now for something completely different.

I don’t know much about MGS4 other than what people claim, “a lot of cutscenes” and “EPIC WIN” (I hope to never use that phrase, again).

With Bioshock, though. Come to think of it, yeah… it was rather easy. I died about 5 times total… probably more, but none-the-less a rather easy game. I believe there should be more arcade-like games with heavy losses when you die or fail. Like in Doom… forget to save, looks like you begin the level with a pistol… if you load your previous save, you probably start in the previous level!

Mario: die… restart the entire level.

Oops, forgot to mention Italian Spiderman in my comment.

Italian Spiderman rocks… there we are.
